about

In 2017 we had an SMD gig booked at Moog festival, this coincided with me doing some sound design for Moog and in chatting to them they mentioned that there is this thing at Moogfest called a “Durational”. It’s pretty open ended, you make sound in a room for 4 hours, anything you like. This sounded like a fun opportunity to make synth drones and stuff like that and they promised to let me borrow a bunch of gear for the event so that I wouldn’t need to drag extra synths with me to America.

As the date approached the fear set in, 4 hours is long. I set aside some time to have a go, the plan was to have my Electron A4 so I could make distinctive and recallable sounds and then as many other synths and boxes as they would lend me for droney chaos. I ended up with 6 Moog Mother 32s and more pedals than we had PSUs. I figured that I’d make stacks of patterns and systems in the Cirklon and then jump between them, hiding the transitions with a Max looper.

I won’t pretend it wasn’t nerve wracking, there were a lot of elements to herd but it was really enjoyable and rather than getting more worried as I ran out of patterns, I found that I relaxed into it and that’s why I’ve done the edits where they are. The first one ‘Early On’ was in the first hour or so, I was piling though patterns to keep things going, the second one, ‘Quite a Bit Later’ was as the title suggests; by then I found that I was getting as much interest out of the texture of a sound as the notes.

The rate of change is slower and there are long sections that seem to change but they are just the same pattern mucked about with. Once a load of people had been and left I’d lost the usual gig mentality of trying to keep people occupied with musical events and started to approach patterns more playfully, with the confidence that people didn’t seem to mind when things went a bit west for a while. I’ve also included two of the rehearsals prior to the show (nos 12 and 16), I recorded these in my studio with slightly different synths, mainly so I’d have something to revise before the event. The Durational itself ended up very different to the rehearsals and these ones seemed worth printing. Thanks to Moog for the gear lend and Moog Festival for encouraging me to do this. Also to the man in the Stetson who stayed for the whole thing, you, sir, are a trooper.
